INNOVATIVE PROJECT OF KV 29, CHANDIGARH We use different words every day to express ideas, thoughts, and feelings to the people around us. Sometimes we communicate successfully and sometimes not. However a good vocabulary can help us to express what we actually mean. Vocabulary is the key to learning any language because without sufficient vocabulary, students cannot express their ideas or understand others. Wilkins wrote,” Very little can be expressed without grammar and nothing can be expressed without vocabulary.” Vocabulary is the raw building blocks that we can use to express our thoughts and ideas, share information, understand others and grow personal relationships. Vocabulary knowledge is perhaps the most important factor when it comes to reading, speaking, writing and listening. So, KV 29 has taken up an Innovative Project to enrich vocabulary for the session 2023-24. The name of the project is- CATCH UP WORDS. Vocabulary skills are critical to each student’s academic achievement. In and Out of the classroom, student’s success depends on grasping reading comprehension. Effective vocabulary will not only improve understanding, it will also improve presentation, application and writing skills of a student. AIM :- Research indicates that for adequate reading comprehension from grade 3 on, children require both fluent word recognition skills and as average or above average vocabulary. This aim of this project will be to engage students in actively thinking about new words, pronunciation of the word, word meanings, and how we can use words in different situations. A rich vocabulary is associated with greater academic performance. DESCRIPTION :- Students’ vocabulary grows throughout their lifetime through direct and indirect teaching. This project will be taken up in an innovative style for all the classes. Various teaching methods will be adopted to achieve the aim, such as: • This project will be Inter- Disciplinary as all the subject teachers will take up the project to enrich vocabulary pertaining to their subject. Mathematics, Science and Social Science teachers will take up key words related to their subject and language teachers will enrich the active vocabulary of the students. • LEVELS :- There will be four levels in this project. L1- Classes 1 to 2 L2- Classes 3 to 5 L3- Classes 6 to 8 L4- Classes 9 to 12 • IDENTIFICATION OF WORDS :- Every month, in the subject committee meeting listing of the words will be done in advance. While selecting the words subject teachers will keep in mind that they will choose those words that students are likely to encounter often and students can learn to use those words in their own writing and conversation. In the subjects other than languages, the words should be content specific. Identified words will be mentioned in the Teacher’s Diary every month. • SPECIFIED DAYS :- Days will be specified for all the subjects. Monday- English Tuesday- Hindi Wednesday- Mathematics Thursday- Science Friday- Social Science • The identified words will be taught by the subject teachers as per the days allotted. From Class 1 to 2, 10 new words will be taught in a month. From 3rd to 5th, 20 words in a month, from 6th to 8th, 25 words per month and 9th onwards 30 words per month. • Creating Vocabulary Notes :- Vocabulary notes encourage students to expand their prior knowledge and boost their language proficiency. Students will maintain a 5 in 1 notebook(one copy for all the subjects) to jot down new words and their meanings. In Secondary classes students will be motivated to use words in their own sentences. These vocabulary word notebooks remind students of their advancement. It will help them realize how much they have progressed throughout the year. • PICTIONARY :- Integrating this project with art education( as per NEP) fun activity will be done in class by Art Teacher. Students will asked to draw pictures for each word to create their own visual dictionary. When students create their own visual representations, they develop association with the word that they will be able to tap into when needed. • Putting students in the “hot Seat”:- This kind of fun activity can be done all the teachers. Class will be divided into two teams. One student will sit in the chair facing the class with his/her back to the board. Teacher will write a word on the board so everyone can see that except the child in the chair. One at a time, team members give the person a clue about the mystery word. If the word is guessed before 1 minute is up, the team gets a point and play turns to the other team. • Word of the Day :- In the morning assembly word of the day will be presented by the House on duty with correct pronunciation, meaning and usage. • Word Card:- Word of the day will presented on a Word Card. Students will write down a single keyword on the card. Daily word Card will support language development and enhance reading. • Word Board:- Word of the day will be written on the Word Board by the House on Duty so that all the students can read it every day. • Maximum use of dictionary will be done by the students to enrich themselves. • ASSESSMENT :- QUIZ:- Once in a month a quiz will be organized during CCA periods out of the words already taught in all the subjects and winners will be awarded to encourage others. PEN PAPER TESTING :- While setting the question papers of PT, weightage of 2 marks will be given to the questions related to the project CATCHUP WORDS. By the end of the session this project will help the students to learn more specific words, nurture a love and appreciation of words and their use. It will directly improve their academic performance as this project will support reading development and will increase comprehension.
